WAC Weekend in Texas

The Aggies opened the last season in the WAC against two new teams. This is a interesting situation we are in this season. We most likely will never play these new teams again and it so it makes it hard to get any real rivalries going. But anyway, this is basketball and the reason for this game is to simply play the game. I hope that is what Aggies do.

It is always hard to watch away games and get a feel for how the game flowed. I was able to watch only a portion of the game on Saturday and Today's game I mostly listened(The video feed and the sound never match up and it was kinda annoying). It was nice though to get the wins on the road at UT-San Antonio and Texas State.

After this weekend I learned:

  • These two teams have small arenas. I am pretty sure I played High School ball in a gym that size...
  • Spencer Butterfield is a hard nosed gritty player. Really starting to get a fell for this system.
  • Two words. PRESTON. MEDLIN.
  • Kyisean Reed, is smart.
  • Slowly but surely the Aggies are coming together as a team.
  • I REALLY REALLY want to witness the  Coach Morrill "sweep" dance.
  • Starting WAC 2-0 on the road is a beautiful thing for this team.

A call to Aggie Students:

The Aggies come home for games on Thursday and Saturday. It always sucks having games during the break because the students are gone, but sadly this year it probably be the same size of crowd. I am pretty disappointed with the lack of love from the students towards Aggie basketball. No longer can you use the "Football is doing so well, we can't love both teams" excuse! Football is over. It is time to devout our full undivided attention to our boys of the hardwood! I know there won't be super amazing teams coming to the Spectrum, but who cares! This is the Spectrum, the happiest place on earth! You answered the call when the football team needed you, now come when Stew needs you. So in an effort to remind you of how great the Spectrum can be. These are clips of times past in the Spectrum:

First Up: Probably the funniest moment in Wild Bill History:

Second: Winning Team/Loosing Team (Take a look at how full that student section is!)

Third: "I Believe"

Added Bonus:
This one I am added for two reasons: 1) because of how big the game was. Nevada was #9 in the country and playing in OUR house.2) I still get nervous for the out come of the game especially during Chaz Spicer's free throws. That was an epic, epic win. Enjoy. (Plus the music adds to the drama)

***End of Post, but if you would like to indulge on one more fantastic Aggie video that gets your heart pumping and tears falling continue scrolling. ***

Just because I love watching old highlight videos on YouTube, this one brought tears to my eyes and a smile to my face:

As you can probably tell, I LOVE AGGIE BASKETBALL!

The Gossner Classic

I was sitting at the game last night and I knew exactly what I wanted to write about for this blog. And surprisingly enough it is not 100% about basketball.

Last night I really noticed something neat at the game. Section H is part of the student section and is usually the "sitting" student section. However, during the Gossner Classic those seats are given to Gossner employees and affiliates. This means only one thing: kids.Families come to these games and that is special. Special because it was this tournament that my love for Aggie basketball was born. I don't know if it was my first game in the Spectrum or not, but it was the first game I remember. I don't have a lot of memories of that game but that I was sitting at the top of Section F with my family, and just before half time Nate Harris hit a half court shot. On that one basket my love for the Spectrum and Aggie basketball began. So some where last night a little child probably experienced their first of many Aggie games.  And their life changing moment that started their love could be that monstrous dunk by Kyisean Reed! Some people criticize the Gossner Classic because it does not bring in the best teams, but I love it. I love it because I was able to go to a game, when normally I would have not have had that opportunity. Who knows, I could have turned out a Cougar?!

Here are my few thoughts on the games. I only made it to the Thursday and Saturday's games and really saw some improvements.
  • Reed is a beast, and he is really playing hard. Love this guy.
  • Medlin figured it out.
    • I hate to say this but I was getting a little frustrated with him. He looked like he was only going threw the motions the past couple of games. But I am happy to say I saw a change in his game from Thursdays game to Saturday's.
  • Davis is a baller. He knows the game and he will be fun to watch in the coming years.
  • Very pleased with the play of Marvin Jean, he took the opportunity that was given to him and has done great things.
  • When Jarred Shaw is in the game(physically and mentally) he can and will be a fantastic player.
  • Matt Lopez, the giant, has potential.
The team heads out on the road for the opening weekend of WAC play. They play at UT San Antonio and Texas St. It will be interesting to see how this first weekend works out. I remember in past seasons this trip can be pretty horrific in terms of the teams playing...

Side Note: Last night while driving up to the game I was listening to Coach Morrill on the radio and once again I was amazed at how cool that man is. I told Heather walking up the stairs and passing the parking lot right out side the Spectrum that one of my goals in life is to be able to park up there for Aggie games (that means I pay a lot for my seats), and my dream would to be a fly on the wall during a Coach Morrill practice! Wouldn't that be the most awesome thing? So their you have it a goal and a dream of Kylie Elwood!

Merry Christmas!

Life and Basektball

This is a week that I don't think many Aggie fans will forget. This week didn't go as anyone expected. I am sure everyone has heard of the scary situation involving Danny Berger and then the miracle that took place following.

Basketball on the campus of Utah State University took a back seat this week as we all prayed for one of our own. Students were getting pumped up for the game in Provo against BYU, but that game suddenly became irrelevant and the only thing we wanted more was to know that Danny would be o.k. There was some extraordinary things that took place this week. From the quick thinking and composed athletic trainer Mike Williams to the outpouring of love from students on campus(hundreds of "tweets" #prayfordanny and writing get well notes on campus Thursday) to seeing Danny at the game last night. This was and is an amazing story because doctors say that Danny will be able to play basketball again!

To the Game:

You could tell there was still a bit of emotion when the game started. It was hard to see the team turn the ball over on their first three possessions and then have to fight to maintain the lead during the first half. Then something clicked. Preston Medlin went crazy! It felt like he scored like 20 points in a row. He took the game over and then allowed for freshman Marcel Davis to shine. Holy Moly! That kid went off in the second half. He already had 8 points to finished half number one. Then he came out with fire and scored 13 points to score a career high 21 points. He was hitting jump shots, 3 pointers and lay-ups. It was fun to watch. It was nice to see the guards making baskets and building confidence. That being said, it was a rather quiet night for our big men, I really hope that this is the only time. They are vital to a Coach Morrill system!

Though it was sloppy and not as crisp as needed, the real story of this game was having #12 in the building!

SCORE: 86-57
RECORD:5-1
UP NEXT: The Aggies have the week off for finals, then Saturday night they play at UVU. They then return home for the Gossner Classic Dec. 20-22.

*Side Note: The BYU game has been rescheduled for February 19 in Provo. The best part, Danny could be playing by then....
