USU vs St. Mary's (Thursday)
The Aggies faced a tough test in St. Mary's and it was only the second game. Going into this game I knew it was going to take every ounce of our players plus the support and magic that comes from the Spectrum. Remembering back to the last time the Gael's made the trip to Logan, I figured I needed to get to the spectrum super early to stand in line to ensure my entrance what is probably the best team visiting the Spectrum this year. I was sorely disappointed when I got there are 3:00 and there was maybe 15 people there. Then even more disappointed when the student section didn't even fill up by tip-off. What happened to the good old days when the student section filled up in 12 minutes!? Ok, that is the end of my student rant. The Game. Second games always scare me. I don't quite have a fell for what exactly each player will bring every game. The game started off with two missed shots by the Aggies and then the worrying began. We held the lead for a while then some how it slipped through our figures and we had to play catch up the rest of the night. The effort and determination by the Aggies was outstanding. They never quit. The battled, they kept shooting, they kept playing D. It simply came down to the inability to stop one guy:
Matthew Dellavedova.
This guy, who I personally can't stand, was every where. Offense, Defense, taunting the crowd, coaching, EVERYTHING! During the game I was secretly hoping for Pooh Williams to magically make an appearance on defense to relieve the bleeding. The Aggies battled. I saw some very good things from this game. Probably the best statistic was Jarred Shaw's 17 points and 15 rebounds! If he continues to improve each game, he will be insane. Also, the defensive play of Kyisean Reed was pretty impressive. It seamed like he always had a hand in the passing lane and came up with some steals in the low post.
Though this game was not what any Aggie wanted to see, there were valuable lessons learned from this game. I have full confidence in the Aggies and trust in Coach Morrill.
Final Score: 67-58 for St. Mary's
Record: 1-1
USU vs Texas A&M Corpus Christi (Saturday)
Probably the single game Aggie fans wanted to forget last year was the debacle at Corpus Christi. I don't remember a lot of details, but I remember it was an ugly one. One that we lost and shouldn't have. Thank goodness that was not the case this time around. The Aggies played smart basketball. The only thing that kept this game close at all was the outstanding shooting behind the arc by TAMCC. They basically only shot 3's and it felt like they were always going in. Once again Jarred Shaw proved to be a huge asset to the team. I am very pleased with the way in which he has grown up over the last two games. No bone-head plays. The game was as expected and the result was what we all wanted. Oh, Preston Medlin is a monster. He is one fun Aggie to watch.
The Aggies have a week off and play next Saturday in the Spectrum vs Weber State. Always a fun game to watch for sure. The similarities between both teams is frustrating but way fun to watch.
Final Score: 77-68 for Utah State
Record: 2-1
